It was a time when, seeing much of the traditional pop music scene in Pakistan diminishing, Ali Zafar, as perceptive as he is, decided to overhaul his image by shedding the boy-next-door garb and taking over riskier song choices. He collaborated with Tufail Ahmad and performed a duet for the soulful  “Allah Hoo” on Coke Studio and that was a start of the new-age Ali Zafar, the singer. We got to hear songs like “Yaar Dhaadi” and the soulful”Daastan e Ishq” in his Coke Studio appearances in subsequent years. The daastan song, according to some, was written by him just a day before the actual recording of the song.

“KOI BHI CHEEZ MUSHKIL NAI HAI KARNE KO. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. “

In the interim years between his Coke Studio appearance Zafar has been busy but very much in the public eye. He has journeyed to territories far and wide in Bollywood working with some of the biggest names and production companies in India, and amassing some of the biggest awards and accolades, not to mention public adoration on all sides of the subcontinent.

After his debut with the controversial, but successful, “Tere Bin Laden” (which got banned in Pakistan) fared rather well, Ali raked in the likes of the prestigious Filmfare Awards nomination, the “Superstar of Tomorrow” at the Stardust Awards and the Best New Talent at the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Awards,, among others. He then went on to star in hits like “Mere Brother Ki Dulhan“, “London, Paris, New York” and the recent “Kill/Dil”.

“WE NEED TO RISE UP AND SPEAK FOR THE KIND OF PAKISTAN WE WANT TO SEE. A PAKISTAN WITH PEACE. A PAKISTAN WHERE PEOPLE LIVE IN HARMONY.”

While juggling so many varied projects of his own, he also stepped in to give back to the people of Pakistan in their time of need. He launched an inspirational music video as a tribute to the Peshawar Army Public School massacre. And has also been involved with various other humanitarian initiatives like sponsoring squash player Noorena Shams and paying for all of her expenses to play in the Asian Squash Tournament.
