6 Best Ways To Celebrate Father's Day With Your Dad

By Sarmad Amer | 21 Jun, 2015

With Father’s day upon us, one must admit it’s a little disappointing seeing a lack of enthusiasm from the interwebs, especially when compared with Mother’s Day. So, not to let our Abbu jees feel any less, here are 6 things every Pakistani father will love to do to commemorate this occasion. And what fun, you can even earn some savaab for making your dad extra happy during this auspicious month of Ramadan.

1. Ride bikes early in the morning.

Rent, borrow or steal (not recommended) if you have to, but riding bikes with your father early in the morning when the weather is so nice and the day is fresh will get your blood circulating for a healthy day ahead. It will also get you to bond over that time as a kid when he taught you how to ride a bike for the first time.

This is the perfect activity in this beautiful monsoon morning.

2. Treat him to an aftaari, just the two of you.

You may think this is an obvious suggestion but when you think of it, how many times do you actually spend quality time with just your dad. Usually he’s too busy making the money that you’re blowing off. Take this Sunday to be the day when you tell him how much he really means to you over some dates and pakoras.

3. Play a game with him.

If he is like most Pakistani dads, he loves some kind of sport (most probably cricket) but doesn’t have the time to indulge more than an occasional big game on TV. Take this Sunday to play a match with him.

Round up all your neighbors, friends and family for a fun activity that gets them all in. You can even host a ‘Dads vs. Kids’ match of your favorite sport.

4. Plan a shopping trip for your dad.

Pakistani fathers usually accompany their kids or wives to shopping trips, as the wallet or the bag handler. Turn the tables on him by making him the center of a shopping trip to buy things for him.

That crisp blue dress shirt you saw in the mall the other day would look good on him, or that new smartphone would be a nice upgrade from his old blackberry.

5. Write a handwritten note to each other.

Ties and flowers are cliché. And your father doesn’t need such a thoughtless gift. Instead, you should exchange handwritten notes with each other. This would help you really pour your heart into the activity. It would also mean so much to both of you to look at that note when you are in different corners of the world.

Here are some ideas for the note to help those creative juices flow: What makes you proud to have him as your father? One thing about your father that you want in your personality. One thing your father taught you that has helped you in your life.

6. Surprise him with a weekend trip to somewhere away from it all.

He is busy all day, every day making sure he can give you the best in life. Sometimes your dad needs that short vacation to just unwind, relax and be away from the daily grind.

Surprise him with a long weekend trip near the Eid holidays to Hunza for a picturesque getaway or maybe just Murree for a change of weather and scenery.

Whatever you do to celebrate the day remember to tell him, at least once, how much you love him because he is the man who stands behind you to catch you whenever you fall, without asking for anything in return.

Happy Fathers’ Day to all the Fathers out there!
